Network and Navigate: Investing in the Next Generation of Civic Leaders

On September 29, the Orrin G. Hatch Foundation welcomed Utah college students living and interning in Washington, D.C. for an evening focused on making the most of their Washington experience. Students from the University of Utah, Brigham Young University, and Utah Valley University gathered at the Hatch House to connect with one another, build their professional networks, and learn how an internship in the nation’s capital can become a foundation for future opportunities and public service.

Matt Sandgren, executive director of the Orrin G. Hatch Foundation, former chief of staff to Senator Orrin Hatch, and longtime Capitol Hill veteran, shared practical advice drawn from his own years in Washington about building relationships, seeking mentors, developing a reputation for excellent work, and taking full advantage of the opportunities that come from living and working in the nation’s capital. The evening reflects an important part of the Foundation’s mission: strengthening the rising generation of civic leaders and carrying forward Senator Hatch’s commitment to mentoring young people who will shape the future of their communities and country.

About the Hatch House

The Hatch House serves as a home base for Utah students in Washington, D.C. Located near Dupont Circle and Embassy Row, the Center occupies two interconnected historic brownstones and includes student housing, gathering spaces, and a separate carriage house used for educational programs and events. The facility was made possible through the support of the Orrin G. Hatch Foundation and other generous donors in partnership with the University of Utah. It can house up to 50 interns each semester, helping remove one of the significant barriers students face when pursuing internships in Washington.
